Down Yonder: A swim in the... sewer?

“Biodegradable,” read the product label. “Concentrated Marine Degreaser.” “Well, hey, that’s pretty good,” the skipper said. “I’m always worried about putting harmful chemicals into the water. You can’t be too careful.”

The battle that was to take place the following day was inevitable and the young general was willing to try anything to help his men and improve his chances. From a nearby village, an old alchemist appeared and privately promised the general victory if a secret scheme and new idea could be employed.

Bonita track packed with Derby watchers as Big Brown wins

The fuss was over horses, not dogs, Saturday evening at the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track in Bonita Springs. Those would be the 20 horses that were set to run in the 134th Kentucky Derby on the dirt track at Churchill Downs. Ahead of post time, the buzz among the crowd at the track in Bonita Springs was over which horses to favor, which bets to makes and which bettors were full of it. “I’ve been researching all week,” Naples resident Tommy Carmon, 58, said with about 90 minutes to go until the biggest horse race of the year. “It’s come down to three horses I like: Big Brown, Adriano and Colonel John. See, Big Brown’s never been beat, and Colonel John, he’s a good closer. And then Adriano, I know the owner.”

The Bookworm: Understanding struggles between mothers, daughters

Practically since the beginning of time â€" or at least in the last couple hundred years â€" mothers who give birth to daughters have looked at those scrunchy newborn faces and into the future, with thoughts of playing dolls, making cookies, sharing secrets, and wearing mother-daughter dresses.

Music Review: Dolly’s moving with the times — again

Dolly Parton’s longevity as a singer can be measured now by how she markets herself. She began her career by going to radio stations, knocking on doors and asking the DJs to spin her records. When she made it to “The Porter Wagoner Show” in the late 1960s, she found a mass audience through television. Now, she’s utilizing the Internet as a marketing tool for the first time.

Open and closed: Naples' Fifth Avenue South has changing face

Doors are opening and closing up and down Fifth Avenue South. Some entrepreneurs are leaving Naples’ main street, but as they pack up, others are painting walls, hanging signs and opening their stores. D’Amzaleg Art Gallery, Gallery on 5th, Oushak Gallery and Trendy with a Twist already have said goodbye to Fifth, and soon Cottontails children’s apparel and Room Interior Philosophy will follow. But as those merchants move out, the list of those moving in grows.

Law would require Florida hospitals to disclose what they will charge

Newly passed state legislation that is expected to get Gov. Charlie Crist’s signature will require hospitals to beef up disclosure to consumers about what they can expect to pay for treatment, especially to the uninsured. The intent is to promote comparison shopping for hospital care and dovetails into the “transparency” movement in recent years. That’s where the public can go to various Web sites to find out how individual hospitals stack up for mortality rates, infection rates, average length of stay, and other information.

Election snafu snares local attorney, but other judges return to bench

For one Bonita Springs attorney who drove the six-hour, 420-mile trek to Tallahassee early Friday and paid the filing fee to qualify to run, there won’t be an election. Collier County Judge Christine Greider thought she’d be running against Fort Myers attorney Miguel C. Fernandez III for a circuit judge seat being vacated by Circuit Judge Daniel Monaco, who is retiring after the end of the year. But Fernandez told her a few weeks ago he wouldn’t be running. Naples defense attorney Janeice Martin also won’t have to run for election because no one else filed papers to run for the seat being vacated by Greider. Incumbents who ended up being unopposed are: Collier County Judge Rob Crown; Collier Circuit Judge Hugh Hayes; Lee circuit judges Lynn Gerald Jr., Ed Volz, Sherra Winesett, John S. Carlin, G. Keith Cary, Mark Steinbeck, and Michael McHugh.
